There is enough scope for employment in Indian as well as foreign ships. And since the Merchant Navy offers excellent remuneration and good career prospects, many young people are being attracted to the profession.Placement may be found on various types of ships such as tankers, cargo and passenger ships. Companies that run merchant ships require trained people who can operate and maintain the ships.
There are mainly three departments of the ship i.e The Deck Department,The Engine Department And the Service Department

Deck Department:-
In the deck department you will be first joining as a trainee cadet after 18 months of sea service you will be qualified for the 2nd mate examination,with further sea service you will be promoted to the Master of the ship.

Engine Department:-
In the Engineering branch, you'll join as a Junior Engineer/Fifth Engineer.With further sea service you could rise to the level of Chief Engineer Officer after upgrading your qualification. But, you cannot be the Captain of the ship as that is only for deck officers.

Service Department:-
This department consists of  the crew members and other members like the saloon rating and the catering department they are responsible for the maintenance and other related works of the ship.

Future Prospects:-
All navigating officers and marine engineers do have the facility that if they wish to settle down in a shore job then they can opt for various marine related jobs as follows:
01. Surveyors and Examiners employed by Government of India
02. Trainers in various training institutions both in Government and private sector
03. Surveyors employed by various classification Societies
04. Pilots employed by Major Ports for bringing in and taking out ships
05. Surveyors employed by various private organizations for settlement of insurance claims, damage
      assessment and cargo calculations, etc.
06. Chartering and brokering for fixture of ships to carry cargo as well as for sale and purchase of ships.
07. Technical Superintendents employed by Shipping Companies to oversee the proper operation of their
       ships.
08. Officers employed by agencies who look after all the requirements of foreign ships
      coming to India.

Being shore based employment, the wages are not as high as on board the ship. However,there are various promotional avenues and perquisites and terminal ashore benefits which the seafarers would definitely find it attractive enough.Many qualified officers have secured shore employment in foreign countries because the Indian qualification comply with the highest International Standards prescribed by IMO and these officers can compete favourably with the best in the world.
